Miss Sierra Leone USA Ruby B. Johnson Stars as Matorma in 2014 Stage Play 'Cry of the Country Virgin'

Hello world!!!

I hope you and yours are doing well. I've been doing fantastic and loving every moment of Summer 2014, thanks be to God! As I had alluded in a previous post, exactly a month from today I'll be starring in the classic Sierra Leonean stage play, Cry of the Country Virgin. Growing up in Sierra Leone and Nigeria, I was very involved in Drama Club and I did a lot of acting and singing, as well as dancing performances and competitions for my schools. I have fond memories of performing at British Council in Freetown representing my Alma Mater The Murraydeen Preparatory School and performing for large audiences. Living in the United States for over the past decade, I got re-involved into theater again through playwright, actor, and director David Buakei Vandy. My first stage play in the US was Let Me Die Alone: The Life and Times of Madam Yoko in June 2011. Fast forward three years later, I'm working with him again as the lead character, named Matorma, in the upcoming production of Cry of the Country Virgin written by Syl Johnson. In addition to acting, I'll be singing and dancing; I'm also learning Mende for some of the dialogue and all the songs. Myself, entire cast, and production team are working very hard to give all of you a phenomenal show, so please be there to support us and open your hearts to be moved by the play's powerful message.

Miss Sierra Leone USA Attends 2014 Sierra Leone Progressive Union's Independence Day Picnic

Hello world!!!

I hope you and yours are doing well. I'm doing fabulous, thanks be to God! On July 4th, I attended the Sierra Leone Progressive Union's (SLPU) annual picnic in commemoration of our nation's Independence Day in Virginia. This was my second time attending this picnic, I was a special guest there last year. It was a lovely event getting to see familiar faces, and meeting wonderful new folks. Being a picnic, the food was delicious and I took home a lovely spread of take-out. Thanks to all that blessed me with the food! Overall, I had a phenomenal time on such a beautiful day.

HAPPY 238th BIRTHDAY, AMERICA!!!
Happy Independence Day to these United States of America. Special thanks to all the women and men that serve our country in and out of uniform. Our nation may not be perfect, but I know we have come a very long way and the best is yet to come. Hardworking citizens of this nation, whether born here or naturalized, built it. I am grateful for the sacrifices made for me to live in this country by my mother, and all the historical figures in the civil rights movement and women's movement, etc. I wear my Miss Sierra Leone USA sash proudly always because I know represent a phenomenal diaspora in a great nation. I am proud to be an American. I am a proud Sierra Leonean American. May God continue to bless the USA.

Miss Sierra Leone USA Walks in FMDS Spring 2014 Urban Jungle Runway Show

Hello world!!!

I hope you and yours are doing well. I've been doing well, thanks be to God! Last week, I walked on the runway for Virginia Tech's Fashion Merchandise and Design Society's Spring Fashion Show, themed "Urban Jungle." Most of the designers and models for this show were current students at Virginia Tech. Below are some photos of me on the runway during the show, channeling my favorite supermodel Naomi Campbell! I'm sure more photos will pop up as time goes by but I wanted to share these photos with all of you. I hope you like them just as I do.

Whenever it comes to doing fashion shows, one of my big concerns is usually my hair styling. Although I am open to have a variety of hairstyles, I am very particular about the use of minimal chemicals and heat on my hair. The coordinators wanted the models in ponytails or hair down in slick form, however, I requested and they agreed that I can rock my hair in its natural texture and do something different with it. Special thanks to my mom for doing my hair in cornrows and bantu knots (which were later taken down to have a big fauxhawk). Thank you to my fellow models Midori and Jasmine for helping me take out the bantu knots and "puffing" my hair! Thanks to Kasey for doing a fierce job with my make-up, as well as for some of the other models. Last but not least, thanks to my stager, Kristin, who helped me get in and out of my clothes and putting on and taking out my accessories for my outfits for the fashion show backstage. All of "you rock, don't change!"

Thank you, Jazzy Ervins for your beautiful and creative designs fit for women of all sizes and color; I felt beautiful and sexy wearing your design and I'm glad I made you proud on stage.

Congratulations to Riley Sixta, one of my designers, who won the Best New Designer Award; I'm wearing one of her collections in the photos above and below in the fashion show. I felt like a Greek Goddess in this design.

Overall, I had a great time at the show and special thanks to the fashion show coordinators (Rachel Carter and Katie Brassington), the designers, runway coach (Midori Oglesby), my fellow models, stagers, and everyone involved in the production of this spectacular event. I met so many amazing ladies during this journey, and made lifelong friendships with these beautiful and sweet ladies. All the models were so helpful to each other backstage, and worked as a team. We are our sisters' keeper. I had a great time!

Portfolio: FMDS Urban Jungle Photoshoot

Hello world!!!

I hope you and yours are doing well. I've been very busy but in all things, I thank God for life and opportunities. A couple weeks ago, I did a photoshoot for a fashion show with the theme of Urban Jungle. This spring fashion show is an annual event created by the Fashion Merchandising and Design of Virginia Tech. The photos were taken by the talented and awesome Lauren Walkup, a senior at Virginia Tech. Special thanks to my mommy for doing my hair. For this shoot, the fashion show coordinators, Rachel Carter and Katie Brassington, were going for a natural look with minimal makeup, and I absolutely love the outcome. So I thought I'd share some of the photos with all of you, hope you love them just as I do!

Miss Sierra Leone USA Walks In Ivy Lounge Salon Grand Opening 2014 Runway Show

Hello world!!!

I hope you and yours are doing well. I've been doing great, thanks be to God! Last Saturday, I participated in the Ivy Lounge Unisex Salon & Spa Grand Opening VIP/Media Preview event as an Ivy hair and runway model. I had such a great time for the couple days spent doing photo shoots, rehearsals, creating new friendships, and many more with my fellow models and the Ivy Lounge hairstylists and event production team.

Fact: Ivy Lounge Unisex Salon and Spa is the newest luxury beauty spa and salon situated in the hub of Hyattsville Art District in Maryland servicing clients of distinct tastes and lifestyles. They offer a range of signature spa and salon services to meet the exquisite needs of their clientele. They offer their clients complimentary consultations with one of their master stylists and beauty consultants.

The grand opening of Ivy Lounge Salon was on Saturday, January 18th but the day before, all the Ivy models had to be there to get hair done, photo shoot for the website, rehearsals, etc. This unisex salon has amazing stylists and I loved that my hair was well taken care of with minimum hair products and no harsh chemicals; being that I wear my hair in its natural state and very curly, things like that are very important to me. I loved that I didn't need to add artificial hair or do anything drastic to it for the show, and I got to rock my own afro throughout the whole weekend. The three photos below are behind-the-scenes shots of my photo shoot with DioBurto Photography. I can't wait to see the final products!

During the show, some models were handpicked to pose as statues. I was one of the models picked, and I had fun with my fellow model. During this time, the sun was shining bright in our eyes, but it turned out to be great lighting for the picture and it looks like we did great as a team!
