Miss Sierra Leone USA Attends 2014 Ecumenical Prayer Service For Eradication of Ebola Virus

Hello world!!!

I hope you and yours are doing well. I'm doing great, thanks be to God! On August 10th, I attended an ecumenical prayer service for the eradication of the deadly Ebola virus at the Good Samaritan Lutheran Church, organized by host pastor Reverend Gloria Malake Cline-Smythe. The purpose of this event was to pray for Sierra Leone with the theme of "Bringing Hope To A Hurting Nation." Sermon was delivered by Reverend Dr. Abdul K. Sesay. I was honored to do the opening prayers in Krio.

Under the organization of Rev. Cline-Smythe, this prayer service was brought by the Washington metropolitan inter-denominational coalition participating clergy from Maryland, District of Columbia, and Virginia. Minister Ken Turay hosted the prayer service. Sacred readings and reflections were done by Bishop Lucy Anthony, Rev. Thomas and Rev. Fifi Bhai Kamara. Prayers for houses of worship, hospitals, clinics, medical professionals, the Sierra Leonean people, caretakers, educational institutions, etc. were done by Rev. Antoine Ellong, Rev. Silas Nicol, Ms. Audrey Pabs-Garnon, etc. Vote of thanks given by President of National Organization of Sierra Leoneans in North America (NOSLINA) and Miss Sierra Leone in DC board member Ms. Suna Nallo.

In addition to my prayers done in Krio, individuals from the congregation led opening prayers in Limba, Mende, Temne, Yoruba, French, as well as Muslim prayers. The inclusion of the variety of prayers with regards to ethnic groups and religion is because Sierra Leone is a unified and religiously-tolerant nation. His Excellency Ambassador Bockari Kortu Stevens (Sierra Leone's Ambassador to the United States) was in attendance and gave the opening statement.

Rev. Sesay requested we pray for three things to pray for Sierra Leone during his sermon: purity, plead for his cause (mercy, grace), and petition (ask God to intervene). Also, he requested women and men of different age groups to come to the altar and represent the demographic of our nation, Sierra Leone. Collectively, we prayed for our Salone.

Before heading inside for the prayer service, my friend told me to do an elegant "beauty queen pose" for this picture. Well, THIS is what I did (photo below). Oh so queenly. Haha! Live your best life, be happy, be goofy, and laugh at yourself. It's good for the soul.

As most of you may know, the Ebola virus spread is destroying our nation currently and as believers I highly trust that we do our physical best but also trust in the Almighty. Let us continue to pray for Sierra Leone, as well as our West African neighbors: Guinea, Liberia, and Nigeria. We are Sierra Leoneans, we will prevail. God bless the districts of the Republic of Sierra Leone.

Republic of Sierra Leone national anthem (first stanza)
High we exalt thee, realm of the free;
Great is the love we have for thee;
Firmly united ever we stand,
Singing thy praise, O native land.
We raise up our hearts and our voices on high,
The hills and the valleys re-echo our cry;
Blessing and peace be ever thine own,
Land that we love, our Sierra Leone.

Miss Sierra Leone USA Leads Health and Wellness Workshop At 2014 AIRF Youth ArtBeat Summer Program

Hello world!!!

I hope you and yours are doing well. I've been very busy but happy, thanks be to God! This summer has been full of adventures for me, and I have been loving every minute of it. It has been such an adventure that I'm actually behind on blogging, but I'll be doing catch-up in the upcoming days to let all of you know what I've been doing. A couple days ago, I led a Health and Wellness workshop for students in the African Immigrant and Refugee Foundation's (AIRF) 2014 Youth ArtBeat Summer Week program.

This Summer Week group involved students in Elementary, Middle, and High School. I had so much fun with the kids, and it is always a pleasure serving AIRF, and recollecting on the days I was in the Catching Up Program back in High School. Our conversation involved health, fitness, hygiene, and the importance of positive and healthy image.

Most of the students in the Summer Program I had the opportunity to meet a couple months ago at the AIRF 2014 Youth Awards. As you may know from my many past posts, I've spoken fondly of AIRF and as an alumnus of the Catching Up Program, it is always a pleasure to give back to the current students.

Miss Sierra Leone USA Attends African Women's Cancer Awareness Association's 2014 Ladies First Breakfast

Hello world!!!

I hope you and yours are doing well. I'm doing wonderful, thanks to the Almighty. On the morning of June 28th, I attended the African Women's Cancer Awareness Association's (AWCAA) 3rd Annual Ladies First Breakfast. As you may know, my personal platform as Miss Sierra Leone USA is Advocating for SHERO, and one of the pillars H is for Health. Therefore, an event such as this is very fitting for me to enlighten and educate myself more on breast cancer and its effect on the African diaspora in the United States.
Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013-2014 Ruby B. Johnson
A signature event by the African Women's Cancer Awareness Association (AWCAA), Ladies First Breakfast is a family-oriented event held to encourage the education and dialogue of breast cancer. According to AWCAA, "This gathering was started to uplift and provide support for women in the community that are either directly affected by the disease or have a family member or friend that has been affected. Know that you come first." AWCAA has been committed to the welfare of breast cancer patients and survivors in the US African diaspora for the past ten years. After losing a mother, best friend, and aunt to breast cancer, I highly recommend you read the full story of how Mrs. Ify Anne Nwabukwu (seen in photo below) started AWCAA on the organization's website.
Founder/President of African Women's Cancer Awareness Association Mrs. Ify Anne Nwabukwu and Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013-2014 Ruby B. Johnson
According to their website, "The African Women's Cancer Awareness Association (AWCAA) is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization. AWCAA was established in 2004 by a coalition of African immigrant women health professionals in order to address disparities in awareness, prevention and access to healthcare for African immigrant communities that face cancer and other life threatening illnesses. The group has grown to encompass healthcare professionals, entrepreneurs and concerned individuals dedicated to eliminating these disparities within the Washington metropolitan area, the continent of Africa and beyond." AWCAA has made multiple medical missions to African nations such as Cameroon, Nigeria, Sudan, and at the end of this year they will be going to Sierra Leone (Freetown and Bo district).

At the event, there was a delicious breakfast buffet setup and phenomenal variety of performances. Present at the event was the always kind and hardworking, Ma Winney Casey; we sat next to each other. I had the pleasure of first meeting Ma Winney last December when I judged the inaugural Miss Tanzania USA 2013 pageant. She is the Founder/Executive Director of the pageant, and also the fashion designer for the beautiful Mitindo Nite African and Kanga designs from Tanzania.
Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013-2014 Ruby B. Johnson and Ms. D.C. Ogwu (two-time cancer survivor)
Sitting to my left on my table, I had the honor of sitting next to Ms. D.C. Ogwu. Small in stature, Mama Ogwu is a two-time cancer survivor and phenomenal woman. Her story is featured in the program book; for the sake of respecting her privacy, I choose to not share the details in this blog post. However, I will say that she is a very powerful woman and from reading her story, it is clear that she's a fighter and very strong woman. I feel blessed to have sat next to her on the VIP table, talk with her one-on-one, and give her hugs during the event whenever she was emotional. She is an inspiration. During the event, all the cancer survivors (including Mama Ogwu) present had a makeover by Avon.

Miss Sierra Leone USA Attends 2014 Launch of Just Stand, Inc.

Hello world!!!

I hope you and yours are doing well. Over the past month I've been occupied with my studies, and also the Maryland Primary Election. I worked during the early voting sessions, and served for the first time as a Chief Elections Judge on election day. I'm thankful to God for my performance, and it's always a pleasure to perform my civic duty as an American and serve my great state of Maryland. As a result of my busy professional and academic life, I'm a bit behind on blogging; I'm also starring in an upcoming classic Sierra Leonean play this August, and I'll share details in future blogs in case you didn't see it on my Facebook page. With all this going on, I'm doing my best to catch up on my blogging about my recent appearances/events. Now let's fast forward... last Saturday, I attended the launching of Just Stand, Inc. and served as one of the speakers.
Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013-2014 Ruby B. Johnson
Just Stand, Inc. is a new non-profit organization that works to stop the cycle of sexual and domestic violence in the African Diaspora in the District of Columbia Metropolitan area, primarily Sierra Leonean. The motto of Just Stand is "Stand and Stop the Cycle of Sexual and Domestic Violence." According to Miatta, "Our vision is parallel to our mission in life, which is to empower young girls to be the peculiar beings God has created them to be" and their mission is "...to raise up an army of virtuous women and girls who do not walk in fear, but power and courage." According to members of Just Stand, the purpose of this organization is to raise funds and create awareness for victims/survivors of sexual and domestic violence in the African and Washington Metropolitan Diaspora.
Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013-2014 Ruby B. Johnson and Miatta Mamie Sandy (Founder/CEO of Just Stand, Inc.)
In the photo above, I am pictured with Miss Miatta Mamie Sandy, Founder/CEO of Just Stand, Inc. A dynamic young lady, Miatta decided to literally take a stand against sexual and domestic violence in the community, specifically among the Sierra Leonean diaspora, and created this organization. In addition to being the CEO of Just Stand, Miatta is the reigning Miss Sierra Leone Maryland 2014 and finalist in the upcoming Miss Sierra Leone USA 2014 pageant.
Miss FA Cole (advocate and author) and Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013-2014 Ruby B. Johnson
At the event, I spoke about the importance of Miatta's cause in the community and women's empowerment. I talked about my platforms of advocating for SHERO and women in STEM as Miss Sierra Leone USA. In addition, Miatta asked me to talk about the work of When You Believe Foundation, Inc. (my baby!!!), so I talked about WYBF's mission in promoting self sufficiency and enhancing the lifestyle of girls and women in all communities. In addition to Miatta sharing her personal story, other guest speakers shared powerful and inspiring stories. One of the guest speakers was Miss FA Cole, a powerful woman of God and multiple forms of abuse survivor. She is a motivational speaker and the author of "Distant Sunrise – The Strength in her Pain to Forgive." Over the past couple months while working on our upcoming stage play, I've gotten to know and admire Miss Cole and her endeavors in empowering women and speaking up for the silent.
Queen Afi Gaston, Miss Miatta M. Sandy, Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013-2014 Ruby B. Johnson
Another phenomenal woman that served as a speaker was Queen Afi Gaston. Queen Afi is the Founder/CEO of Domestic Violence Wears Many Tags, an organization that caters to women, men, and teens that victims and abusers of domestic violence. I've known Queen Afi for more than three years and collaborated with her several times with her and her organization for my organization, When You Believe Foundation, Inc. She is not only a wonderful and passionate woman, but is a big sister to me and has taught me so much.

Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013-2014 Ruby B. Johnson, Miss FA Cole, Miss Miatta M. Sandy, and Miss Nefertiti Brown (spoken-word artist)
In addition to the speakers and Miatta's keynote speech, there was a spoken-word performance by Miss Nefertiti Brown, dance performance by Miss Jessim, and praise dance by young girls choreographed by Miatta from her Church. It was also lovely to see how supportive Miatta's Church family is of her and her efforts. That's a blessing to have. The refreshment given out at the event was also very delicious.

I wish Miatta and her Just Stand, Inc. team all the best. She has taken up a big and relevant cause, and I wish her God's many blessings in her endeavors. Overall, this was an empowering and enlightening event, and I'm happy to have been part of the birth of Miatta's baby.
