Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013 Serves The Needy At SOME

Hello world!!!

I hope you and yours are doing well. I've been busy but happy, thanks to the Almighty. On November 26th before sunrise, I volunteered serving breakfast in the dining room at So Others Might Eat, Inc. (SOME) in Washington, District of Columbia. Service and giving back is something that has been instilled in me from a young age, and that is why it is part of my personal platform as Miss Sierra Leone USA, which is Advocating for SHERO (S is for service).
Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013-2014 Ruby B. Johnson
So Others Might Eat (SOME) is the only interfaith, community-based organization in the District of Columbia that offers a comprehensive, holistic approach to caring for the homeless and extremely poor citizens of the city. SOME exists to help the poor and homeless of our nation's capital. They meet the immediate daily needs of the people they serve with food, clothing, and health care. They help break the cycle of homelessness by offering services, such as affordable housing, job training, addiction treatment, and counseling, to the poor, the elderly and individuals with mental illness. Each day, SOME is restoring hope and dignity one person at a time.

Coincidentally, Miss California 2013 Crystal Lee and Miss Maryland 2013 Christina Denny were also at SOME serving as volunteers with me. Crystal is the first runner-up to Miss America 2014 Nina Davuluri, and Christina finished in the Top 10 at Miss America 2014. This was the first time meeting these ladies but our titles and similar experiences helped us bond as if we've known each other for a while. It was a pleasure meeting these kind ladies, and we had such an awesome time talking about our titles, our pageants, duties and experiences during our reign, and I answered their many questions about Sierra Leone.
Ms. Tawan, Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013-2014 Ruby B. Johnson, and some members of the Carlyle Group
Besides me and my fellow queens, there were other volunteers that came individually and in groups. Some groups consisted of students from Catholic University of America (CUA), the Carlyle Group, etc. One of the members of the Carlyle Group is a Hokie alumnus, and of course we high-fived and hugged each other after we discovered we were both Hokies; it's all about Hokie Love! Some of the volunteers, SOME staff, and folks we served breakfast were very interested and curious to know about Sierra Leone, and I was more than happy to have their questions answered. Also, I took lots of pictures with individuals that wanted a photo with me when we had breaks from serving breakfast.
So Others Might Eat (SOME), Inc. volunteers
I loved working with this group of volunteers and we had great chemistry working and serving the people. We really were the definition of teamwork and all efforts made the process very smooth in serving breakfast to the people. Special thanks to our supervisor, Ms. Tawan, for guiding us throughout the process and taking great care of us. Thank you to Seneca Wood, the volunteer coordinator.
Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013-2014 Ruby B. Johnson
This was a humbling experience, and I could tell that the folks we served were very grateful for the food and our service. Days like this make me very grateful to the Almighty for what I have but also to be in a position that I can give back to others.

Miss Sierra Leone USA Talks About The Fourah Bay College Project

Hello world!!!

I hope you and yours are doing great. I'm doing fantastic and the past few days have been a little busy but also exciting to be surrounded by family and friends. To God be the glory. On November 22nd, I attended a formal meeting by Save Sierra Leone Foundation, Inc. The purpose of this meeting was to give updates about the past and current endeavors of SSLF, as well as to listen to the proposal of Reverend Raymond de-Souza George about his current project titled The Fourah Bay College Project - Making Education a Priority in Sierra Leone and the possibility of forming a partnership with SSLF. I am currently the director of Networking IT Communications of Save Sierra Leone Foundation.
Ms. Patricia O. Thorpe-Finney (President of SSLF), Rev. Raymond de-Souza George, and Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013-2014 Ruby B. Johnson
Rev. Raymond de-Souza George fondly known as “Papa Ray” to his students and admirers in the theater industry is a multi-talented creative artist, history professor at Fourah Bay College (University of Sierra Leone), and recently ordained minister . For over forty years, Papa Ray has used his passion and his extraordinary talent for the performing arts to uplift the consciousness of Sierra Leoneans to strive for higher ideals. I remember my days as a student at Murraydeen Preparatory School and Methodist Girls' High School in Freetown learning about Rev. de-Souza George, Dele Charley, John Kolossa Kargbo, Esther Taylor-Pearce, and other theatre legends in my drama and social studies classes. Coincidentally, my drama teacher at Murraydeen and one of my favorite teachers in the world Mr. Jonathan Bundu was one his trained students in theater; Mr. Bundu is one of the main reasons I fell in love with theater in Sierra Leone as a young girl and was so excited to be back on stage in April 2011 performing Let Me Die Alone: The Life and Times of Madam Yoko with Sierra Theatre Productions. Founding member of Sierra Theatre Productions in the US, Mr. David Buakei Vandy, was also trained by Papa Ray.
Rev. Raymond de-Souza George and Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013-2014 Ruby B. Johnson
There are three layers to Rev. Raymond de-Souza George's Fourah Bay College project. His mission "Using theater as a power to uplift others" will be used to create a summer 2014 tour around the United States with his cast from Sierra Leone that will perform his famous play, Bכbכ lεf. Layer 1 consists of structural and internal reparation of Mary Kingsley Auditorium at Fourah Bay College; funds will be used for painting, lighting, reroofing, possible extension of the building, purchase of generator, dressing rooms, sound equipments and electrical wiring, storage facilities, etc. Layer 2 consists of internal and structural reparation of Eldred Jones Auditorium at Fourah Bay College which includes seating, intercom system, facility urinals, generator purchase, secure locks, etc. Funds generated from Papa Ray's Tour with his cast nationwide in the US will be used to benefit these two layers of the Project. Layer 3 consists of civic education. Papa Ray believes that there is a need for attitudinal change among Sierra Leoneans. He believes that civic education will positively impact the nation by changing people's thought patterns, attitudes, and behavior regarding work, change, and empowerment; he strongly believes that we (Sierra Leoneans) need to be nation-conscious NOT region-conscious. I strongly agree! Efforts towards this third layer includes: preservation of existing body of creative works, social mobilization (attitudinal change, patriotism, and nationalism); use of drama, poetry, and songs via radio, newspaper, television, posters, and banners; there will be a need for office space, computer, printer and scanner, generator, and transportation provisions.

In attendance were: Rev. Raymond de-Souza George, Ms. Elvina de-Souza Omidiran (daughter of Papa Ray and owner of Brye Cupcakes), Miss Rachel (granddaughter of Papa Ray and daughter of Ms. Elvina), Mr. Prince Thorpe (SSLF director of research and development), Ms. Patricia O. Thorpe-Finney (Founder/President of SSLF), Mr. Sam Bangura (SSLF director of Marketing), Dr. Festus Cole (Historian and friend of SSLF), and Mr. Sully Hamid (SSLF director of Public Relations). The meeting consisted of: presentation by Rev. Raymond de-Souza on the FBC Project, Question-and-Answer segment about the proposal, SSLF voting on the proposal, identifying key players for the development of the project, and devising plans and dates for the FBC project and Papa Ray's USA tour.

On Monday, November 25th, some members of Save Sierra Leone Foundation along with Rev. Raymond de-Souza George and Ms. Elvina de-Souza Omidiran visited the Embassy of Sierra Leone in the United States in Washington, DC. In attendance was: Chief of Mission His Excellency Bockarie Kortu Stevens, Deputy Chief of Mission Ambassador Ibrahim S. Conteh, Head of Chancery Mrs. Isatu Isha Sillah, Ms. Patricia O. Thorpe-Finney, Mr. David Buakei Vandy, and Mr. Sully Hamid.

Save Sierra Leone Foundation delegation and Embassy of Sierra Leone staff
The purpose of this gathering at the Embassy of Sierra Leone was to present Rev. Raymond de-Souza George's Fourah Bay College Project to His Excellency Ambassador Stevens and to discuss a collaboration with the Embassy of Sierra Leone regarding the FBC Project. Discussions involved: the role the Embassy of Sierra Leone can play in the project, strategies for fundraising and advertisement, announcement of the upcoming town hall meeting, etc. In conclusion, this meeting was a success and the embassy is on-board and excited to collaborate in making this dream of Papa Ray come true. I am sure this project will and should receive support from FBC students and alumni, Sierra Leoneans, and friends of FBC and Sierra Leone.

As a Sierra Leonean with a passion for the arts and someone that acted in many plays in Sierra Leone as a young girl, I highly support Papa Ray's endeavors. I am aware of the importance and legacy of the Fourah Bay College and its influence of how Sierra Leone became known as the Athens of West Africa. My personal platform as Miss Sierra Leone USA is advocating for SHERO and E is for education, every pillar of the FBC project embodies the need for better education in the university as well as Sierra Leoneans at home and abroad. If you will like to know more about Papa Ray's project and more about his summer 2014 USA tour with his cast, please visit the Save Sierra Leone Foundation website. There is also a wonderful opportunity for you to meet Papa Ray and hear his plea along with members of Save Sierra Leone Foundation at the Town Hall meeting this Sunday in Maryland, USA. Here's the link to the event page. See you then.

Miss Sierra Leone USA Judges The Golden Affair 2013 Pageant

Hello world!!!

I hope you and yours are doing well. I'm doing well, thanks to the Almighty. On Sunday, November 17th, I served as one of the judges at The 2013 Golden Affair Pageant. This pageant was a joint event produced by the women of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. (Eta Omega chapter) and the men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. (Eta Lambda chapter). The crowned winners will be the male and female representative of the sorority and fraternity as Mr. Rhomance and Miss Omega, respectively.

FACT: Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. (ΣΓΡ) was founded on November 12, 1922 at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana. The sorority is a non-profit whose aim is to enhance the quality of life within the community. Public service, leadership development and the education of youth are the hallmark of the organization's programs and activities. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority,Inc. has members in undergraduate and alumnae chapters throughout the United States, Bermuda, Bahamas, Canada, and Korea. The slogan of this organization is "Greater Service, Greater Progress."
Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013-2014 Ruby B. Johnson
FACT: Omega Psi Phi (ΩΨΦ) is an international fraternity with over 700 undergraduate and graduate chapters. The fraternity was founded on November 17, 1911. Omega Psi Phi Fraternity is the first fraternal organization to be founded on the campus of a historically Black college (HBCU) at Howard University. From the initials of the Greek phrase meaning, "friendship is essential to the soul," the name Omega Psi Phi was derived. That phrase was selected as the motto. Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance and Uplift are the Cardinal Principles of the organization. Omega Psi Phi and Sigma Gamma Rho are members of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC); the NPHC is composed of nine international black Greek-letter sororities and fraternities and promotes interaction through forums, meetings, and other mediums for the exchange of information, and engages in cooperative programming and initiatives through various activities and functions.
Presenation of awards to the 8 contestants of the Golden Affair pageant
The contestants were: Tara Shockley, Chris Terry, Dashauna Williams, Kwame Coles, Angel Walsh, Darren Siler, Princess Gibson, and Rodney Godfrey. This was my first time being a pageant judge, and honestly it was a nerve-wracking experience. I have been on the other side of a pageant before as a contestant when I competed at Miss Sierra Leone USA 2012, but I felt that it was much tougher to be a judge. As a judge I had to put away all forms of bias and focus completely on presentation and what we were required to look for in each segment of the competition. From the performance of all the contestants, I could tell that they worked very hard on each segment of the competition so I wanted to show positive approval with my scores but I also had to be honest with my scoring on level of performance in contrast to the others. It was also interesting to see how similar and different the preference of my fellow judges were. The talent presentations were phenomenal; I also loved the on-stage-question segment: one question based on contestant's opinion, and another question about Sigma Gamma Rho asked by a ΣΓΡ member or Omega Psi Phi asked by a ΩΨΦ member. All the contestants did an amazing job, but I know we chose two phenomenal individuals.
Miss Omega 2013 Tara Shockley, Mr. Rhomance 2013 Kwame Coles, and Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013-2014
Awards such as best in evening gown, Miss Congeniality, contestant that raised the most money, best in swimsuit, best in 1920s look, and best talent performance were presented to the contestants. The first-runner up to Miss Omega was Miss Angel Walsh, and first runner-up to Mr. Rhomance was Mr. Rodney Godfrey. Congratulations to Miss Tara Shockley (crowned Miss Omega) and Mr. Kwame Coles (crowned Mr. Rhomance). Congratulations to the planning committee and all the contestants of The Golden Affair pageant. A job well done, and thank you for having me as a judge.

Miss Sierra Leone USA Attends 2013 Deeper Missions West Africa Celebration

Hello world!!!

I hope you and yours are doing well. I'm doing great, glory be to God. Also, I want to thank all of you that have been contributing to and supporting my journey as your Miss Sierra Leone USA. I truly appreciate each and every one of you, and I wish all of you God's favor in return. On Saturday, November 16th, I attended the 2013 Deeper Missions First Annual West African Celebration in Burke, VA. According to the executive director of Deeper Missions, Derek Reinhard, this evening was to celebrate the continued growth and service of Deeper Missions in West Africa.
Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013-2014 Ruby B. Johnson
This evening consisted of culture, friendly and enlightening conversations, delicious Africa-themed food (such as jollof rice, fufu, chicken, etc.) and a silent auction to raise funds for the organization's efforts. This evening was time to learn about the work of Deeper Missions, experience West African cuisine and culture, and to get the coming year of service off to a great start. A time to celebrate the beauty and culture of the continent of Africa! Being that this was also a fundraising event, there was a silent auction in which attendees competed for various small gift-packs and medium-priced items including autographed memorabilia and some high-value travel, golf and adventure-of-a-lifetime packages. Really great deals!
Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013-2014 and Mr. Derek Reinhard (Executive Director of Deeper Missions)
FACT: Deeper Missions is a tax exempt 501(c)3 public charity, dedicated to changing and saving lives. Through meaningful mission travel, Deeper Missions implements sustainability projects, such as clean energy, safe water and sanitation. The mission of Deeper Missions is "to supply materials and provide on-the-ground services which improve the education and livelihood of the people of West Africa." The current efforts of Deeper Missions are on environmentally-friendly projects such as self-contained solar lighting (so children can study without using the typical and unhealthy open-flame lamps) and community-friendly fresh water well-digging and waterless solar composting toilets in Bo, Sierra Leone. Deeper Missions believes that without managed sanitation and safe water sources, drinking water for communities and schools is contaminated, causing ill health and loss of school/work time.
Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013-2014 Ruby B. Johnson, Ms. Ronke Luke (President of the Women's Council on Energy and the Environment) and her friend from Malawi.
The entertainment of the night consisted of drumming and storytelling by Kofi Dennis with friends and family, as well as drumming and dancing by KanKouran West African Dance Company. Mr. Dennis told a story about Anansi The Spider, a series that is told widely in many West African communities. It was really great to hear this story again along with the drumming. Mr. Kofi Dennis has performed in many big and small events, and has also been invited by the African Students Association at Virginia Tech several years ago to perform for the Hokie nation. At the end of the event, I had a great conversation with Mr. Dennis and expressed how much I enjoyed watching his performance and told him of how talented and beautiful his daughters are.

The other entertainment of the night include drumming and dancing by KanKouran. The mission of KanKouran West African Dance Company "is to preserve and promote traditional West African culture by providing quality entertainment and educational programs to local and national audiences in an effort to facilitate cross-cultural enrichment." KanKouran did an excellent performance that evening, and had everyone in attendance moving. During their presentation, I was even invited to dance with them, and of course this Salone titi a.k.a Sampa accepted the invitation. I showed them some of my Sierra Leonean moves. Thanks to Mrs. Dahlia Orleans-Pobee, here's a video that captured some of my performance on my youtube channel.

Ms. Ronke holds a master’s degree in chemical engineering from the Technical University of Karlsruhe, Germany. Ms. Luke is a Sierra Leonean, and was born and raised in Freetown. I loved sitting next to Ms. Luke and learned so much about her and her many endeavors. Other Sierra Leoneans that were in attendance were Mr. Sorie Songowa (husband of Honorable Wullaimatu Hannah Bundu-Conteh Songowa) and Mr. Gibrilla Bundu-Conteh (brother of Honorable Wullaimatu Hannah Bundu-Conteh Songowa). Special thanks to Derek Reinhard and Michelle DeFreese for inviting me to this event. Congratulations to Michelle on being awarded the Deeper Missions Volunteer of the Year. From the many great things said about her that night, she truly deserves that award and I could hear the passion in her voice for Deeper Mission and her love for Sierra Leone. A very big thanks to Mrs. Dahlia Orleans-Pobee and Mr. John Orleans-Pobee for opening their door to their home and being my host of the weekend. I had an amazing time during the weekend, and loved spending time with Ms. Dahlia; she reminds me so much of my mom, and I was happy to have her as my surrogate mommy for the weekend. Thank you for also taking my pictures and recording videos throughout the evening. May God continue to bless you and your wonderful family.
