Miss Sierra Leone USA Talks Miss International 2014 - Queens of Africa

The Miss International Pageant is an annual international beauty pageant held since 1960. Miss International is part of the Big Four international beauty pageants: Miss World, Miss Earth, and Miss Universe. The 54th edition of Miss International will be held in Tokyo, Japan on November 11th. The current Miss International titleholder is Bea Rose Santiago from Philippines.

This pageant has a history of not being friendly to Black beauties, and there has been a significantly low number of Black women chosen to be semifinalists. The first woman with some African ancestry to be awarded the title of Miss International was Jeymmy Paola Vargas from Colombia in 2004; she is mixed. In the 54-year existence of the Miss International pageant, no African nation has ever been awarded the title of Miss International.  The highest placement of an African country at this pageant was in 1996; Miss International Tunisia 1996 Ibticem Lahmar placed first runner-up. The Republic of Sierra Leone has never been represented at the Miss International pageant.

The Miss International Pageant is an annual international beauty pageant held since 1960. Miss International is part of the Big Four international beauty pageants: Miss World, Miss Earth, and Miss Universe. The 53rd edition of Miss International will be held in Tokyo, Japan on December 17th. The current Miss International titleholder is Ikumi Yoshimatsu from Japan.

According to the Miss International Wikipedia page, "contestants are expected to serve as 'Ambassadors of Peace and Beauty', demonstrating tenderness, benevolence, friendship, beauty, intelligence, ability to take action, and, most importantly, a great international sensibility. The ultimate goal of the Miss International beauty pageant is to promote world peace, goodwill, and understanding."

Miss Sierra Leone USA Talks Miss Universe 2013 - The Queens of Africa

I hope you and yours are doing well. I've been very busy but loving every moment of life, thanks to the Almighty. The 2013 Miss Universe Pageant is set to broadcast live on NBC on November 9 from Crocus City Hall in Moscow, Russia. There will be more than 80 women represent their nations around the world competing for the title of Miss Universe 2013. I've always found it funny that the Pageant is called "Miss Universe" but the contestants are all from Planet Earth (haha). There is currently no representative from the Republic of Sierra Leone for the Pageant. Sierra Leone has never been represented on the Miss Universe stage, but by God's grace I know we will in a few years to come. The reigning Miss Universe 2012 is Olivia Culpo from the USA.

Fact: Janelle Commissiong of Trinidad and Tobago was the first Black woman to have won the title of Miss Universe in 1977; Wendy Fitzwilliam, also of Trinidad and Tobago was the second Black woman to win the Miss Universe title. In 1999, Mpule Kwelagobe of Botswana became the first Black African woman and third woman of African ancestry to be crowned Miss Universe; Miss Universe 2011 Leila Lopes (pictured above) is the second Black African woman and fourth woman of African ancestry to hold this title.

Although not representing her native country in Africa, she's one of my favorites for the crown. She's Miss Israel 2013 Yityish Agnaw, a woman born in Ethiopia but relocated to Israel some years back. When she was crowned Miss Israel earlier in the year (first Ethiopian Jew, and first Black woman to hold this title), I read her very touching story about migrating from Ethiopia and starting her new life in Israel.

Hope you and yours are doing well. I'm doing fantastic, thanks to the Almighty. Being that the Miss Sierra Leone USA Pageant is the first and only pageant I've competed in, I spent time prior to the pageant and continue to grow, admire, and be inspired by past and present titleholders. One of the amazing things about the world of pageantry is that there are lots of titleholders, pageant junkies, and pageant systems out there to learn from around the world, it all depends on what traits and characteristics you're looking for out there because there's a role model Queen doing or an organization supporting your kind of platform! One of the most famous pageants in the world is the Miss World Pageant. The upcoming 63rd edition of MW will be held this year on September 28th in Bali, Indonesia.

Fact: The Miss World pageant is the oldest surviving major international beauty pageant. The winner spends a year travelling to represent the Miss World Organization and its various causes. Miss World is part of the Big Four international pageants: Miss World, Miss Universe, Miss Earth, and Miss International. Beauty with a Purpose, formerly known as Miss World Scholarship, is an event established in 2001 that is celebrated during the activities prior to the Miss World pageant. It awards the contestant with the most relevant and important charity project in her nation. Other Challenge Events include: Miss World Talent, Miss World Beach Fashion, Miss World Sports, Miss World Top Model, Miss World Multimedia, etc.

Fact: In the history of the Miss World Pageant, 4 women representing African nations (South Africa, Egypt, and Nigeria). Agbani Darego is the first Black African woman crowned Miss World in 2001, she was Miss Nigeria 2001; Miss World winners from South Africa (2) and Egypt (1) were of European and Greek descent, respectively.

As a reigning titleholder and Brown girl, I am inspired by my fellow Queens of African ancestry in the Continent, as well as by Queens around the world. The purpose of this blog post is to to highlight the beautiful and elegant women representing the continent of Africa. There is currently no representative for the Republic of Sierra Leone for this year's edition of MW. Update: Miss World Philippines Megan Lynne Young is Miss World 2013. She's the first woman representing Philippines to have won the Miss World title. Miss France came in 2nd and wins Miss World Europe title, and Miss Ghana came in 3rd place and wins Miss World Africa title.
