Miss Sierra Leone USA Attends 2013 Leh We Talk Annual Party

Hello world!!!

I hope you and yours are doing well. The past few days have been very relaxing for me and I've been surrounded with love, family, and great friends. Last night, I attended the 'Leh We Talk' Annual Party at Taste Ultra Lounge in Washington, District of Columbia.
Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013-2014 Ruby B. Johnson
The main purpose of the 'Leh We Talk' Facebook group is to have Sierra Leoneans and non-Sierra Leoneans participate in an open on-line forum for focused debates and decision-making processes which pertain to various social, political, environmental, and developmental issues; inclusive of grassroots, national and international levels.

Partial proceeds from the ticket sales will be going towards Sons Of Africa and Peagie Woobay Scholarship Fund. The event was hosted by Ms. Janice Williams of Sierra Leonean Empowerment Network (SLEN), and we were entertained with great music by Josie "DJ NoName" Beckley. Being the foodie that I am, I will gladly let you know that the food was very delicious. My stomach was happily filled with delicious Sierra Leonean food!

Overall I had a great time. It was wonderful to put the faces to names of folks I have interacted with via Leh We Talk over the past year, as well as seeing familiar faces again. Great job to the Leh We Talk team for putting up a classy and fun event.

Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013 Serves Breakfast At SOME

Hello world!!!

Happy Holidays, everyone. I hope you and yours are doing well. I've been doing fantastic and enjoying every moment of this holiday season surrounded by love, family, and friends. Yesterday morning, I volunteered at So Others Might Eat, Inc. (SOME) serving breakfast. A month ago, I served breakfast at SOME, and it is always a pleasure being of help to the SOME staff and folks in need. My personal platform as Miss Sierra Leone USA is Advocating for SHERO, S stands for Service.
Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013-2014 Ruby B. Johnson
SOME before sunrise
The reason why I choose to serve breakfast at SOME in contrast to lunch or dinner is because I believe that breakfast is a very important meal and can determine the outcome of one's day. Eating a nutritious meal early in the morning provides energy and sets the pace for an individual's mood to start their day. Being that I personally handed out the food to the individuals, I believe that saying "good morning" with a big smile and cheerful countenance can help to brighten the individual's day.
Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013-2014 Ruby B. Johnson
Fact: So Others Might Eat (SOME) is the only interfaith, community-based organization in the District of Columbia that offers a comprehensive, holistic approach to caring for the homeless and extremely poor citizens of the city. SOME exists to help the poor and homeless of our nation's capital. They meet the immediate daily needs of the people they serve with food, clothing, and health care. They help break the cycle of homelessness by offering services, such as affordable housing, job training, addiction treatment, and counseling, to the poor, the elderly and individuals with mental illness. Each day, SOME is restoring hope and dignity one person at a time.
Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013-2014 Ruby B. Johnson
Be a Queen with a Crown and a Cause
The work of the SOME staff is fantastic, but the contribution of volunteers is vital. It is always great to meet the folks I volunteer with and see their passion to serve their community. I met a nice gentleman from Ghana who was there to volunteer, and he told me that he was in the United States for the holidays; he mentioned that his young daughter is the reason he was there to volunteer. What a great way to spend time with one's child, and to serve those that do not have enough during the holiday season.
Mr. Charthell (SOME staff) and Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013-2014 Ruby B. Johnson
Special thanks to Mr. Charthell, our volunteer supervisor for the breakfast service. Thank you for being a great host and coordinator throughout the whole process. Overall, I had a great time serving the people. It is always a humbling experience serving at SOME and I'm always grateful for the work this great organization does for those in need in our nation's capital. It is great to receive, but there is always great joy in giving to others and serving one's community. Have a great weekend, everyone.

You were put on this earth to achieve your greatest self, to live out your purpose, and to do it fearlessly. - Steve Maraboli

Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013 Attends 'The Will' Movie Premier

Hello world!!!

I hope you and yours are doing well. I'm doing fantastic, thanks be to God. Last Friday, I attended the premier of The Will. This screening of The Will was the first premier in the United States, and Mr. Bangura is currently touring the US to promote this movie to Sierra Leoneans and friends of Sierra Leone nationwide.
Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013-2014 Ruby B. Johnson and Mr. Jimmy "Jimmy B" Bangura
This movie is a Salone production that was shot entirely in Sierra Leone. It was produced and directed by Mr. Jimmy Bangura (actor, singer, producer, musician, and director) in the photo above,  and he also stars in the movie as Michael Fox. Mr. Bangura came all the way from Freetown for the premier. There were musical performances, and the event was hosted by Mr. David Buakei Vandy.
Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013-2014 Ruby B. Johnson
Mr. Edward "Bizo Da Mayor" Kargbo of African Radio Salone and Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013-2014 Ruby B. Johnson
The Will storyline: Michael Fox is a brilliant lawyer who has never lost a case. A man with a very bright future. However, his womanizing ways eventually gets him into serious trouble. Michelle Thomas is a close friend and a work colleague whose friendship with Michael is constantly put to the test almost at a point of nearly destroying her marriage. This story deals with the realities of life. A very intense, emotional, and drama-packed movie.
Overall, it was a fabulous event with delicious food and the movie was great! I highly recommended everyone to attend future screening of this movie in an area near you. Also, grab your copy of this movie and have it as part of your personal collection.

Your Miss Sierra Leone USA.

Miss Sierra Leone USA Hosts The 2013 African Immigrant and Refugee Foundation Youth Conference

Hello world!!!

I hope you and yours are doing well. It's been a very busy couple weeks for me academically, but I'm thankful to the Almighty that all is well. Last Friday, I had the honor of hosting the 11th Annual African Immigrant and Refugee Foundation's (AIRF) Youth Leadership and Education Conference. The theme of this year's conference was "Charting a New Course in Health Education and Health behavior among African Immigrant Youth." The theme of this year's is also near and dear to my heart because my personal platform as Miss Sierra Leone is Advocating for SHERO and H stands for Health.
Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013-2014 Ruby B. Johnson
In high school, I was a student in AIRF's Catching Up Program (CUP) for African youth. One of the many things I'm grateful for this program during my high school years was that I had the opportunity to write a play for the 2007 conference and later converted it into a movie in 2008, acting with my CUP peers. CUP is a great program that was very influential in my high school experience and I am forever grateful for this program and do my best to always return and help out in any way I can as a graduate and mentor to the students now.

Fact: The mission of the African Immigrant and Refugee Foundation (AIRF) is to facilitate the effective transition of African Immigrant to American society and to support their productive, sustainable integration into their new homeland.
Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013-2014 Ruby B. Johnson, Tambra Raye Stevenson, MS, and AIRF volunteer
I had such an amazing time from the beginning to end of the conference, and enjoyed every part of my job as the host. Opening the conference was Pages Matam, a multidimensional tourist artist originally from Cameroon. Pages did two spoken-word performances, one about rice and the other about his love and respect for his mother. Both poems were amazing, but I truly enjoyed his performance about rice. As a big lover of rice, I agreed on everything he said and the Sierra Leonean in me is forever thankful for rice. The conference consisted of several workshops discussing health-related topics relevant to the lives of the attendees and their loved ones.

The "Becoming American" workshop was moderated by Ms. Julian B. Kiganda of Bold and Fearless, and the panel consisted of Loy Azalia, MA (Ugandan); Ndinda Rebekah Ngewa, MPH (Kenyan and Nigerian); and Nana Brantuo, current PhD candidate (Sierra Leonean and Ghanaian) and creator of The New African blog. The "What's Eating You" workshop was done by Tambra Raye Stevenson, MS; Tambra is the Founder of Nativsol Kitchen. The "Sex, Drugs, and Rock & Roll" workshop was done by Ms. Omonigho Ufomata and Adedotun Ogunbajo, MHS; this panel discussion consisted of discussions of sexual identity, cultural identity, and pop culture. The "Hey Doc, Am I Crazy?" workshop was conducted by Akua Asara, M.D., Dr. Shirley Pierre Roberson, and Dr. Theodore Osuala; the main discussion with this panel was on mental health.
Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013-2014 Ruby B. Johnson doing the azonto dance moves
All work and no play makes Miss Sierra Leone USA a dull queen. In the photo above, I was showing the students some of my azonto dance moves. Towards the end of the conference after the high school students did a wonderful performance, attendees were invited to dance and celebrate the successful outcome of the conference. Being that my nickname is "Sampa" (due to my love for dancing), I had to put aside my task as host and show some of the students my Salone and African dancing skills in my heels and sash!!!

Group photo of some of the students, mentors, teachers, speakers, etc. at this year's conference
Overall, I had a great time with the students and I'm humbled to have served as the host. I learned a lot from each workshop, and I know the students did as well. Like I previously stated, I am very grateful for the services and resources the African Immigrant and Refugee Foundation provides, and I know the impact they made in my life is being made in the lives of the current students as well. S in my personal platform (Advocating for SHERO) stands for Service and this organization is one of the first that taught me the power and importance of serving one's community. If you would like to contribute by serving as a volunteer or make a donation, please visit the AIRF website.

Miss Sierra Leone USA Judges The 2013 Miss Tanzania USA Pageant

Hello world!!!

I hope you and yours are doing well. I've been doing great and very busy, but overall I'm thankful to the Almighty. This past Saturday, I served as one of the judges at the First Annual Miss Tanzania USA 2013 Pageant. It was an evening of celebrating Tanzanian culture and women, good music from artists around the continent. delicious food, and generally showcasing the beauty of the African continent. Congratulations to Ma Winney Cassey, designer and creator of Mitindo Nite and founder of the Miss Tanzania USA pageant, and her team for a successful event. The event was hosted by Mrs. Tumaini Kaisi-Katule and Mr. H. Gil Ingles.

According to the Miss TZUSA website, "The pageant goal is to help young Tanzanians girls in the U.S achieve and perform to their full potential via a successful education and personal growth thus laying a strong foundation for them as future productive members and leaders of the Society." The crowned Miss Tanzania USA will compete at the Miss Africa USA 2014 pageant next year, representing her nation.

Her Excellency Liberata Mulamula (Ambassador of Tanzania to the United States) and Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013-2014 Ruby B. Johnson
At the event, I had the honor of meeting the Ambassador of Tanzania to the United States, Her Excellency Liberata Mulamula. She is a very down-to-earth and fun woman. This was the first time I have seen an Ambssador enter a room and took the time to walk around to greet everyone and shake hands with everyone without any formality. That's an admirable trait for an ambassador and a great individual, in my opinion. Besides being so kind, she's also a great dancer and she showed us some of her African dance moves during the show. She is truly a phenomenal woman and I even tweeted about her while I was at the event of how much I adored her. During the show, I even whispered to my fellow judge, Peter S. Walden, that now I want to become an ambassador because of her.

Being a judge at this event was a tough decision and I'm sure my fellow judges would agree, because all the ladies were phenomenal! From their presentations in each segment of the competition, I could tell they have worked hard and prepared for their time on that stage. As an African woman, I am extremely proud of each and every one of them, even though they made my job tough that evening. Bravo to the Miss Tanzania USA committee, production team, and the amazing contestants.
Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013-2014 Ruby B. Johnson
Congratulations to the winners of the pageant, and I wish them all the best in their year of service as Miss Tanzania USA representatives. Miss Julia Nyerere (political science student) emerged as the 4th runner-up and Miss Namala Elias (nursing/pre-medical student) was the 3rd runner-up to Miss Tanzania USA 2013. Miss Faith Kashaa (clinical laboratory technology student) from Maryland won the title of Miss Tanzania USA 2nd runner-up, and Miss Doreen Rumaya (kinesiology pre-medical student) from Pennsylvania won the title of Miss Tanzania USA 1st runner-up. The beautiful and talented Miss Joy Kalemera from New Jersey won the grand title of Miss Tanzania USA 2013-2014. Miss Tanzania USA Joy Kalemera currently works as a chemical engineer and in her spare time enjoys drawing, painting, and playing volleyball. Since I was crowned Miss Sierra Leone USA, I have been advocating for SHERO as well as the recruitment and retention of girls and women in STEM; so as a STEM student and mining engineer, it makes me so proud to see my fellow STEM sisters that are taking over pageantry!
