Miss Sierra Leone USA 2013 Homecoming - Week 1 (Part I)

Hello world!!!!

Hope you and yours are doing well. I've been busy but doing fantastic, thanks to the Almighty. As promised, I'll be writing detailed blogs about my adventures during my recent homecoming trip to Salone as Miss Sierra Leone USA; read my preview blog post. Since Monday (April 29th) was a national holiday in Sierra Leone because of the Independence Anniversary, I got to take a break from my Miss Sierra Leone USA schedule to rest. I did some school work, spent time with family and friends, and later enjoyed bathing in the African sun while seeing sites in my city (Freetown).

On Tuesday (April 30th) morning, I met with Mr. Ibrahim Kamara, President of Octea Mining Group (Koidu Limited is its subsidiary). Koidu Ltd. (formerly Koidu Holdings) is the largest diamond mining company in Sierra Leone. As a current mining & minerals engineering student, I was very grateful to have had this meeting and get to know more about their various projects. I talked lengthily with Mr. Kamara about my platform as Miss Sierra Leone USA, which is advocating for SHERO, my passion for advocating for the recruitment and retention of girls and women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields, as well as my future plans as a mining engineer. In return, he spoke highly of the Miss Sierra Leone USA franchise, and gave me lots of advice with regards to my reign and future career.

At midday, I participated in Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation’s (SLBC) Lunch Time Break show. This was my first national television appearance, as well as live show, so I was a little nervous. However, I quickly got comfortable because I was surrounded by a great group of people in the studio. Hosted by Asmieu Bah, I was among a panel that consisted of Ms. Rose Konima Stevens (Journalist), Mr. Daniel Moseray (creator of Wan Pot), and newly-elected President of Women in Media Sierra Leone (WIMSAL) Ms. Asma James. I spoke about my adventures so far as Miss Sierra Leone USA, the mission of my trip in Sierra Leone, my academic life, as well as my personal platform of advocating for SHERO and promoting girls and women’s recruitment and retention in STEM fields.
